Dr. Sayani Banerjee

Where SCIENCE finds its RHYTHM

Dr. Sayani Banerjee moves with ease between two seemingly distant worlds: the exacting discipline of biotechnology and the expressive, soul‑stirring art of Indian dance. A scientist in a leading biotech pharmaceutical company, she earned her PhD from the renowned Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in Kolkata. Her research was supported by the prestigious CSIR Fellowship, awarded by the Government of India.

In the lab, Banerjee is recognized for her rigor, curiosity, and dedication to advancing biomedical innovation. Beyond the lab bench, she steps into a different kind of spotlight as a performer and choreographer with Dream Catchers, a troupe that brings the vibrancy of Indian culture to the community.

During International Week at Ohio University, India was represented by Dr. Sayani Banerjee, where she was featured as a distinguished dancer and highlighted in Ohio newspapers in 2016. More recently, her dual contributions to science and the arts were recognized by Providence Monthly, underscoring the fulfillment and purpose that arise from pursuing one’s passions.

Dr. Banerjee is also a member of a women’s leadership program, through which advocacy for inclusive representation and cross‑disciplinary mentorship is actively advanced. In 2007, she was awarded the Lakmi Sananda Style Diva title, reflecting her longstanding engagement in diverse cultural and community activities. During her doctoral studies, back in phd life she represented the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in the 1st CSIR Inter‑Institute Badminton Tournament, where a championship position was secured.

She believes being a scientist, one can’t confine work within a nine‑to‑five schedule. You have to study constantly just to stay updated,” she reflects. “Like dance, you listen and create. Music gives wings to my soul. Whenever I listen, I feel something rising from deep within the heart, ultimately transforming into dance.”

Where SCIENCE finds its RHYTHM

Sayani’s artistic journey is rooted in Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form of Tamil Nadu known for its expressive gestures, grounded stances, and storytelling through movement. She is equally admired for her command of the Uday Shankar style, a modern Indian dance tradition that blends folk, classical, and even European ballet influences. Popularized in Bengali cinema by Shankar’s daughter Mamata, the style is fluid, dramatic, and emotionally rich—qualities Sayani brings to every performance.

Sayani’s Family

Beyond her scientific pursuits, she finds her greatest joy in her family. She is a devoted mother to her two sons—eight‑year‑old Reyansh and toddler Vedaant (affectionately known as Hrid and Spondon). The boys are opposite poles in personality: one calm and contemplative, the other endlessly energetic and keeping her on her toes.

Her husband, Sukanta, has been her steadfast partner since their Ph.D. days in India. Both completed their doctoral studies at the same institution, where a simple friendship gradually deepened into love. Their shared journey—rooted in mutual respect, intellectual camaraderie, and unwavering support—continues to be the foundation of their family life.
