Bornomala
On February 2, 2025, the Bengali Association of Rhode Island (BARI) announced the founding of Bornomala, the first Bengali school serving children in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. Established and operated by dedicated BARI volunteers, Bornomala was created to provide children with an opportunity to learn the Bengali language while developing a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Bengal.
Open to children of all backgrounds, Bornomala offers a welcoming environment where students can explore Bengali language and culture through engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences. In addition to developing language skills, students are introduced to the diverse traditions, history, literature, art, music, and personalities that have shaped Bengal and its people.
The school’s mission extends beyond language instruction. By connecting children with Bengali culture, Bornomala seeks to help preserve and celebrate an important cultural heritage while creating opportunities for families and the broader community to learn and participate together. Students are encouraged to discover the many dimensions of Bengal—from its literary and artistic traditions to its historical figures, cultural celebrations, and contemporary contributions.
As a volunteer-led initiative, Bornomala reflects BARI’s commitment to strengthening cultural connections within the Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts community. The school provides a space where children can learn, build friendships, and develop a meaningful connection to Bengali language and heritage, while also welcoming families who simply wish to learn more about the culture.
Bornomala represents an important new chapter in BARI’s cultural and educational outreach, creating a foundation through which Bengali language and heritage can be shared with younger generations and with the wider community.
